What unlimited data should mean, and how to check

Hard caps, Fair Usage Policies and hotspot limits: the three questions that tell you what an unlimited data plan really means, before you pay.

What unlimited data should mean, and how to check

Unlimited is one of the most stretched words in mobile data. Some plans wear it while quietly cutting you off or slowing you to a crawl after the first few gigabytes. Here are the questions that tell you what a plan really means by it, before you pay.

Question one: is there a hard cap, and what does the Fair Usage Policy say?

Start with the hard limits. Does the plan stop working, or drop to an unusable speed, after a fixed number of gigabytes a day or a month? If it does, it is a bundle with a big number on it, not unlimited data.

Then read the Fair Usage Policy. Almost every mobile network has one, including the networks unlimited plans run on, so its existence is not the problem. What matters is that the provider tells you it applies, says what it is for, and does not hide it. A typical policy lets the operator manage speed during exceptionally heavy use or network congestion, so a cell stays usable for everyone on it. Be wary of a plan that claims no limits of any kind: that claim is rarely true.

Question two: what happens to hotspot?

Some plans give you unlimited data on the handset and then cap or block tethering entirely, which is the one thing you actually needed it for. Hotspot should be unrestricted, not metered separately.

Question three: what happens at the end of the month?

Watch for plans that reset, expire or auto renew. A twelve month term paid once has no monthly cliff to fall off, no renewal date to remember and no card to cancel.

How we answer those three

  • No fixed daily or monthly data cap, and the Fair Usage Policy stated up front. Stream, call, navigate and work as you need. Speeds may be managed under the network operator's Fair Usage Policy, and our terms say so plainly.
  • Hotspot is unrestricted. Run a laptop off it all day. People do, and we are fine with that.
  • One payment covers twelve months. No contract, no renewal, nothing to cancel.

A realistic note on speed

No honest provider can promise a fixed speed, because nobody controls a congested cell tower at six in the evening. Speed depends on the local network, how busy it is and where you are standing. What we do promise is to be straight about it: the eSIM covers the whole country you buy it for, not just the capital, and if you want to know what to expect in a particular town, ask us before you buy.
