The U.S. Virgin Islands are made up of a handful of main islands, each with its own rhythm. St. Thomas is the busiest, with Charlotte Amalie as the capital and port, and Red Hook on the east end as the ferry and marina hub. St. Croix, the largest island, is quieter and more spread out, with Christiansted on the north shore and Frederiksted on the west. St. John, reached by ferry from St. Thomas, has Cruz Bay as its small, lively town and much of the rest of the island set aside as national park.
